Runenexerzitien

For those of you who may be interested, here is the Runenexerzitien, well,
the experimental settings that went along with my Rune-exercizes...these
were formulated in the late 80's, completed and in some cases reconsidered
in the early 90's...what's below are those that offered proven results for
myself and those of my students who tried them. Also, I include a bit of
explanation as to what inspired the setting, or how I came to use a
particular setting...
FA- facing a fire, or preferably between two fires (one to front/one
to rear)...this of course, is based on FA as 'die Quelle' -THE source of
primal potential and potential energy, the ultimate repository of all
dynamic energy forms...represented, obviously, as fire- or primal fire.
UR- originally, I tried this in a drizzle, adhering to the later
Nordic name form for the rune, which did in fact coincide with the mystical
processes of Arizing-Being-Passing Away to NewArizing...(evaporation/condensation/precipitation)
..but it was too much a distraction for me to concentrate (don't like
getting rained on, what can I say)...later workings, I did this by a
lakeside as symbolic of Urdabrunno and had good results...
Thorn- I suppose you can try this in a thicket of thorns, but in
truth, I never did..instead, try the newly seeded field or during a thunder
or lightning storm...I did both, and the latter produced great results...as
we live in the sue-happy age, I have to add that you shouldn't do this
out-of-doors at such a time...;)
Os- on a windy Autumn day...overcast is best, at dusk..or even in the
early dark of evening...with the rush of the wintry wind all about- when you
can feel the presence of the Runengot quite strongly...
Rit- within the haruc or wickstead...both obviously tie to the
'religious' ..as for judicial, the wickstead provides the better ambiance-
the Germanic Thing was conducted in a wickstead roped off, just as an
outdoor faining would be...works well!
Ka- I first tried this in the studio ('art', proper, not music) at
school..there, I always felt such an amazing peace- it was like a 'creative
sanctuary' not to get all fruity about it...so, it was perfectly fitting for
the rune...another place where it works (and I did this only a few years
ago) is in a natural opening in the earth, for me, it was an opening in a
mountain...this of course, provides the link to the Primal Smiths, the
Suarzalpā, the dwarves...such an opening should be spacious enough not to
feel constrictive or tight...
Hagal- in the entrance or threshold to the house or barn- the shelter
of man
or beast, the mundane embodiment of the Holy Order and nuturing protection
that is the mystery of Hagal on one level...
Not- by a flowing watercourse- a large stream or some river, or
sitting in a
craft in a river or stream...this was inspired by the runic verse:
I know an eighth
It is useful for all to have it:
When hatred swells
Among the sons of warriors
I am able to settle it.
...seems unrelated? The Ostrogoths were my inspiration here- there are
examples of them settling disputes on a boat- just the two opposing lords-
on a river...what always struck me interesting is the underlying mystical
significance of it...the river as the course of order itself (Rit), the
water as that Life-bearing water of wurt (Laf), and the flow...carrying away
not only the contention, but bringing that influential action, carrying it
to its proper place within the well to be added as a layer of action and so
an Urlag of settlement out of need...
Is- the most successful working I had with this was in the dark of a
Winter's night with Holda's mantle upon the ground, and fresh flakes falling
lightly...in that dead calm and settlement that only the snow seems to
carry;) as it falls...the complete stillness given to it and the rune...
Ar- sunrise, as the light breaks upon the worker..that is, sunrise at
the point where Sunna actually becomes visible to you, where she first
bathes you in her radiant glory...
Sig- 'under the shield'- under the sun at high noon at her daily apex
of power..
Tyr- by a tree or column at which offerings are left/sacrifices
made...works best at that stead and at noon-tide on the summer solstice...
Bar- I tried this at a bog, the place at which offerings to Nerthus /
Ertha
the earth mother would be made....more successful I found to be in a close
ravine, surrounded by that damp, cool earth..in the coolness and closeness
of her Being...here, it is good to find that deep place where you can feel
that closeness, that narrowness...helps not only in the connection to Ertha,
but to her aspects in concealer/womb of the earth, etc...
Laf- at the beach, along (or in the shallows) of the ocean. Laf is
the primal water, and Huerglemer being the primal well is best characterized
by the ocean- the ultimate expression of the power of water and its dynamic
nature...
Man- at the full of the moon in the open...spring or summer night
Yr- at a graveyard, or in a moody place, overcast autumn days work
best, or at evening (without a full moon)...moody meaning someplace
'haunted' or with some minimal active energy...not something where you
couldn't protect or ward yourself properly, but a place with some residual
moodiness to it....
Eh- in the home.. somewhere particularly associated to say, the union
of the marriage or bonds you hold with the one you live with in
trust...obviously, this would mean the bedroom for many...some place within
the home that is shared, kept as particularly of the partnership or
marriage...
Gibor- In a clearing at the apex of a hill, mountain, or some other
rise in the earth that sets you apart from the level upon which you normally
walk...especially at the time of the winter solstice...
well, that's it...nothing too fancy, but for those interested, such
experimentation does indeed lend such a holy benefit to one's personal
workings..for those well initiated in the runes, the associations and
attributes given here are quite obvious...
Alaf Sig Runa!
